Demand for vacation homes in Germany is booming

Bremen, 15 May 2020. In the coming weeks, most federal states will open their doors to holiday guests and will allow the renting of vacation apartments and homes. The relaxation of travel restrictions will also increase the desire to travel. The analyses of the online marketplace Traum-Ferienwohnungen show: The run on vacation homes in Germany is currently huge. Particularly over the Whitsun days and summer months, vacationers want to travel, especially accommodations at the North and Baltic Sea are in demand.

“The previous feeling of uncertainty and reluctance is currently being transformed into a boom of demand. We are seeing this in the enormous increase in the number of visitors and booking requests,” says Sebastian Linke, CMO of Traum-Ferienwohnungen. Most vacationers are currently looking for accommodation in Germany, followed by holiday homes in the Netherlands, Austria and Croatia. In the last seven days, the online portal was able to register over three million visitors to the exposé pages of German holiday accommodation.

Vacation homes in Germany are more requested than ever

The anticipation of the next vacation in a vacation home seems to be even greater than ever before: “The enormous increase in booking requests even tops last year’s good results. In the first week of May, booking requests have more than doubled compared to last year. The trend is still rising. If we take the main phase of the corona restrictions at the end of March as a comparison period, we had 36 times more booking requests last week,” says Linke happily. “Instead of booking a long-distance trip, many holidaymakers now choose the safe option and prefer a holiday in a vacation home in Germany or in neighbouring European countries”. Furthermore, Linke believes that the enormous increase of requests is also due to the business model of the vacation home portal itself: “Via our portal, guets and home owners can get in direct contact with each other, inform themselves about hygiene measures in the accommodation and negotiate details of the rental contract individually. Our data analyses show that holiday home vacations and the privacy that such vacations bring with them are playing an increasingly important role as travel restrictions are relaxed”.

Accommodation in coastal regions very well frequented

Most inquiries are currently registered for holiday destinations on the North and Baltic Sea.”The East Frisian islands, Sylt, the Lübeck bay, Fischland-Darß-Zingst and Rügen are currently particularly far ahead in terms of popularity,” says Linke. The majority of the travel dates requested are currently during the summer holidays, but the days around the Whitsuntide are also very popular. The German coasts are already almost fully booked. But there are still enough free accommodations for spontaneous travellers in attractive holiday regions away from the beaches: “The Allgäu offers a wide range of free accommodations for all types of requirements, from holiday homes and tiny houses to luxury apartments. For hiking tours with the family or the dog, the Harz Mountains are ideal. For those who enjoy wine and good food, there are still free holiday flats on the Moselle, for example. There’s plenty of fresh air and exercise on a bike tour lasting several days with an overnight stay along the Havel,” advises Linke.

If you’re planning a bike tour in the near future or would like to get on your bike and take a ride through the nearby nature, Traum-Ferienwohnungen has put together the most beautiful bike tours in Germany on its own website. In addition to cycle paths and route recommendations, those interested can also find tips on how to plan their tours correctly and also the right accommodation along the route.
