Rush on vacation homes in the summer – Accommodations in Germany and Italy already heavily booked

Bremen, May 28, 2021. After Whitsuntide summer vacation is very popular. According to evaluations of the portal Traum-Ferienwohnungen, over 2.5 million vacationers looked in the last week for accommodations in the summer months June to August. Particularly desired are the German coastal areas at North and Baltic Sea as well as accommodations in Italy at Lake Garda, in Tuscany or in the Dolomites. The demand for vacation homes is currently so great that many accommodations are already fully booked for the summer.

“As soon as vacations are possible again, popular destinations are already well booked,” says Franziska Borel, press officer of Traum-Ferienwohnungen. “As soon as relaxations of travel restrictions and quarantine regulations are decided in a federal state or in neighboring European countries, this is directly reflected in our figures. In most cases, people even look for accommodation in the respective country directly on the day of the announcement by the media,” Borel continues. The fact that vacation homes are enjoying such great popularity again this summer comes as no surprise to Borel: “Vacation homes offer a completely self-sufficient vacation. Vacationers can be independent, keep their distance from others and arrive in their own car.”

Vacation homes in short supply at German coastal resorts

The popular German beach holiday destinations in particular are in high demand this summer. On the Bay of Lübeck, on the island of Rügen and on the island of Sylt, more than 90 percent of the accommodations are already fully booked in August. In East Frisia or in Cuxhaven 80 percent of the accommodations are occupied. Also for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the inquiry numbers on the portal of Traum-Ferienwohnungen are rising after it was announced that Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania gradually re-opens tourism. Starting from May 28 locals and owners of a secondary residence can take a vacation in the area, a week later starting from 4 June vacationers from other federal states can enter with a current test. From June 11, both private trips to friends and acquaintances as well as day tourism should be completely possible again.

Popular resorts in Italy in high demand

Since Italy lifted the quarantine requirement for tourists on May 16, demand for accommodation there has soared. Anyone wishing to enter Italy now only has to present a negative Corona test that is 48 hours old at maximum. That’s why vacation homes are currently in short supply in popular resorts in Italy, too. In Tuscany and Lake Garda, only 40 percent of accommodations are still available in August, and only 20 percent in the Dolomites. In July, the occupancy figures are only slightly better and there are still a few more accommodations available.

Travel destination Germany in 1st place

Over 80 percent of vacationers looked for accommodation in Germany last week. Italy is currently the second most popular vacation destination, followed by Croatia, the Netherlands and Austria.

Security when booking a vacation

The Corona crisis meant that vacationers have not been able to plan their trip without worry. The interest in accommodations which can be canceled free of charge is therefore high. Traum-Ferienwohnungen created an own filter, which indicates all accommodations with free cancellation possibilities at a glance. Furthermore, vacationers also have the option of taking out Corona additional protection as part of a travel cancellation insurance policy, which protects vacationers against unforeseeable cases in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic.
